What is the difference between adult dog daycare and puppy preschool?Adult dog daycare is a program for dogs 7 months and older. It is a combination of play and rest and does not include any training unless added on by request. Adult dogs must be altered to participate in daycare. Puppy preschool is a daycare and training program for dogs 10 weeks to 7 months and is a combination of play, rest and training.

What happens if a dog misbehaves? We are absolutely committed to positive reinforcement and do not use any spray bottles, shake cans, bark collars or physical punishment. Our first solution is always management which means altering the physical environment, so the undesirable behavior is less likely. That can mean moving a dog to a different play group, bringing in a dog that would like to play the same way, using gates and x-pens to make the space smaller or larger or introducing toys to the playroom. We also use time-outs from play which means removing the dog from the playroom for anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes so they can calm down and make the association that the undesirable behavior results in loss of opportunity to play. We also provide structured rest so that dog's stay at the right level of stimulation. Some play styles are not compatible with daycare and some dogs just are not comfortable in a large group of dogs, in these cases we will recommend dismissal from daycare and provide referrals to other great companies that offer a different type of exercise.

What is the dog/attendant ratio? We believe that the healthiest, safest situation for dogs is a small amount of dogs playing per group with playgroups divided based on size, energy level and playstyle. Our group ratios are as follows Big dog room (large older dogs with more mellow playstyle): 1 attendant with up to 10 dogs. Medium dog room (large younger dogs with high energy play style): 1 attendant with up to 4 dogs. Micro dog room (small dogs): 1 attendant with up to 12 dogs. Puppy preschool (puppies 7 months and under) 1 attendant with up to 6 dogs.

What about the concern that my puppy is not fully vaccinated? It is our firm belief that the benefits of early socialization far outweigh the risk of illness. All dogs at The Dog Spot have proof of up to date vaccinations. The American Veterinary Association has put out a position statement on the benefits of proper socialization out weighing the risk of exposure. Visit www.AVSABonline.org then click Position Statements for further information to make an informed decision prior to bringing your puppy to preschool.
